People are throwing away their Fitbits over fears about privacy after Google announces $2.1 billion buyout of the wearable tech company
Google purchased the San Francisco-based wearables company on November 1 However some Fitbit users are concerned about how the firm will handle data In a blog post Google promised not to sell health data or use it for advertising - Ian Randall
If Twitter is anything to go by, the last steps measured by many Fitbits over the past week were taken to the fitness trackers' final resting place — the bin.
Unhappy Fitbit users announced they were ditching the devices over privacy concerns following Google's purchase of the activity tracking firm on November 1.
San Francisco-based Fitbit Inc, which boasts 28 million worldwide users, was purchased for $2.1 billion (GBP1.6 billion).
In response, many Fitbit users threatened to switch to other wearables instead — including smart watches made by rivals Apple and Garmin.

How Do Fitness Trackers Work? Fitness trackers such as Fitbits or smart watches monitor heart rate using a technique called photoplethysmography.
The tracker sends green light through the skin which is partially absorbed by arteries.
As you exercise, these arteries expand as blood flow increases - meaning more green light is absorbed rather than reflected back to the tracker.
The tracker estimates your heart rate by seeing how much light is reflected back.
The amount of light that passes back through the skin to the tracker can be affected by the amount of melanin in the skin, and any tattoos.
'It seems impossible, but #Google is about to increase its obscene #surveillance program dramatically,' wrote Robert Epstein of the American Institute for Behavioral Research and Technology.
'It's buying #Fitbit to monitor our sleep, activity, exercise, heart rate & more. Fitbit doesn't use such info to manipulate us; Google will. #BeAfraid.'
'My @Fitbit will go in the bin — who owns @Garmin?' replied Twitter user Janet Duffy.
Meanwhile, Claire Alexander wrote: 'My @Fitbit Charge3 is now In the bin. Data/account deletion request made.'
'Do you really think your UK customers #trust or will accept @Google FFS, seriously!'
'Let’s see how the #EUdata position unfolds... #applewatch here I come'
Both Fitbit and Google have been quick to respond to the negative reactions of these users.
'Strong privacy and security guidelines have been part of Fitbit’s DNA since day one, and this will not change,' said Fitbit co-founder and CEO James Park.
'The company never sells personal information and Fitbit health and wellness data will not be used for Google ads.'

Oakland bans the use of facial recognition, becoming third US city to do so - Christopher Carbone
The Oakland City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to prevent city employees, including the police, from using or acquiring facial recognition technology.
Amid increasing scrutiny of the technology, which has been labeled as biased by lawmakers like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Oakland joined San Francisco and Somerville, Mass., which both passed similar bans this year.
A report prepared by City Council President Rebecca Kaplan cited limitations of the technology, the lack of standards around its implementation and its potential use in the persecution of minorities. In particular, the report cited research that concluded the software is less accurate for women and dark-skinned people, and particularly inaccurate for black women.
"Decisions about whether we want to hand the government the power to identify who attends protests, political rallies, church, or AA meetings should not be made in the secret backroom of a police station, lobbied by corporate executives that market this technology. These decisions should be made ... through an affirmative vote by their elected representativesm," Matt Cagle, technology and civil liberties attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, told Fox News via email.
Fight for the Future is calling for a total ban on facial recognition technology at the federal level.
One digital rights organization, Fight for the Future, is calling for a federal ban on the technology due to the potential for misuse and privacy concerns.
"The tech industry is disingenuously calling for regulation of facial recognition because they want to keep raking in profits by selling it to governments who want to use it for authoritarian surveillance. Some technology simply shouldn't exist in the government's hands," Evan Greer, deputy director of Fight for the Future, told Fox News.
Although Oakland police have not obtained any facial recognition software, other agencies across the U.S. have, including the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, which scans its mug shot database with facial recognition software, according to a report by Oakland police.
AOC, SANDERS DEMAND PROBE OF AMAZON'S 'UNSAFE' WORKPLACE CONDITIONS
Report: FBI, ICE agents scanning driver's licenses using facial-recognition technologyVideo Other agencies at times access San Mateo County's database through the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center.
Oakland police has argued that the council should continue to allow that use of facial recognition software and ban it only in real-time applications, such as scanning an active surveillance camera for wanted suspects. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Mr. & Mrs. Blahsheblu - reprinted from 2016
Once upon a time there was a hardworking couple named Mr. & Mrs. Blahsheblu, pronounced "blah-she-blu."
Mr. & Mrs. Blahsheblu were happily married for 17 years with three young children, owned and operated a successful business employing 52 employees for more than 15 years. They also had an upper class home, fully paid off mortgage of recent date and everything was just hunky-dory for them!
One day out of the blue, a squad of government alphabet agents showed up with guns drawn at their business, unannounced and without warning. The head alphabet honcho flashed his badge/ID card and boldly announced that they (the alphabet agents) had a criminal search warrant and were there to inspect the business, building and question all the employees. Naturally Mr. Blahsheblu was shocked, surprised and quite unset by this occurrence, but complied with all the agents' demands.
Mr. Blahsheblu was bodily searched (for guns?) and not allowed to make any calls to anyone, including his attorney until the alphabets departed.
The inspection of the business and the grilling of the employees lasted all day. In fact, the alphabet agents ordered pizza for lunch and left pizza boxes, soda cans, paper coffee cups and cigarette butts all over the business when they finally departed late that evening. Mr. Blahsheblu was forced to keep the business opened for three hours after the normal closure time, whilst having to pay overtime to his employees. At the end of this very stressful 'inspection' and interviews of all 52 employees, the head alphabet agent and alphabet agents finally departed.
Mr. Blahsheblu was so upset by this invasion by the alphabet agents that he couldn't sleep for three nights. He then immediately called his attorney. The attorney said he would try to find out what was going on, but as it was afterhours, nothing could happen until Monday, as this happened on a Friday payday at Blahsheblu's business. All the attorney got Monday from that particular alphabet agency was they could not comment on an ongoing criminal investigation.
After a few days all appeared to return to normal and Mr. Blahsheblu got back into the swing of things with the business once again running smoothly and efficiently, or so he thought.
The next inkling of trouble occurred about two and a half weeks after the 'inspection' by the alphabet agents. Mr. & Mrs. Blahsheblu's payroll cheque's to their 52 employees bounced. After frantically calling the bank to find out what the problem was, Blahsheblu learnt that not only was his business account frozen and all business funds were sequestered, but Mr. & Mrs. Blahsheblu's personal chequing, savings and brokerage accounts also faced the same fate, i.e., frozen and sequestered.
Later that same morning Blahsheblu received a registered letter from the alphabet agency stating what Blahsheblu already knew, his funds were frozen and sequestered plus he was being investigated for criminal activities and employee abuse and discrimination. What alleged criminal activities were not disclosed!
Once again Blahsheblu called his attorney and faxed him a copy of the alphabet order or letter. The attorney said he'd get back to Blahsheblu and did so about an hour later. Blahsheblu's attorney said this matter was way over his head and recommended a criminal attorney associate of his and then arranged a meeting the following Wednesday, two days away.
At the meeting with the criminal attorney, who was a former employee with the same alphabet agency that raided Blahsheblu's business, the criminal attorney said this was a serious matter and would take a good while to sort out. He then requested a US$50,000 retainer if Blahsheblu wanted to retain his services and informed Blahsheblu that his services were US$500 per hour plus expenses. Ouch!
As Blahsheblu had difficulty raising the 50,000 USD due to the seizure and sequestering of all his funds, it took him a few days to borrow the money from friends and relatives. However by the end of the week he obtained the $50,000 for the criminal attorney's retainer and the soon to be long drawn out matter started its slow snail like bureaucrat process.
Naturally this was all over the news and TV and even class mates of their children said that their father (Mr. Blahsheblu) was a crook and were told by theirs parents not to play with Blahsheblu's children. Nice people eh?
Matters went from bad to worse during the next ten months. The banks called in their loans to Blahsheblu, which he couldn't repay on such short or no notice. Long time employees left by the droves and replacement employees had to be trained, all placing an incredible amount of stress on Bladsheblu. Suppliers wanted cash on delivery for anything ordered. Vendors drastically cut back ordering from Blahsheblu and financial matters finally came to a head ten month after the raid… The Blahsheblu's had to file for bankruptcy protection in order to salvage what was left of their life, finances and in hopes of saving their home.
The coup de grace came when Mr. Blahsheblu was served with divorce papers after returning home from work one day to find an empty house. Mrs. Blahsheblu had taken the children and went to live with her parents' on the other side of the country without the decency of telling him face to face.
To make a very long and sad story short, after spending $350,000 on legal fees or one sort or another, filing for bankruptcy, having a divorce with unfair alimony and child support (based on what he was earning BEFORE this debacle started,) losing his home, business, life savings and family, plus his health as well, Blahsheblu learnt that a disgruntled former employee had filed numerous complaints with 3 or 4 alphabet agencies until one agency took notice and acted on their complaint. Apparently the disgruntled employee claimed racial discrimination, sexual harassment, and claimed that Blahsheblu personally instructed employees to operate machinery in an illegal manner, all of which was a total falsehood.
Although the criminal case was eventually dropped, a consent agreement was mandatory if Blahsheblu wanted to put this matter behind him. In the order, which he signed to get rid of this once and for all, he was to pay a $500,000 fine and penalty, which couldn't be discharged in bankruptcy because he had filed for bankruptcy recently to try and save his business and home as well as agreeing not to discriminate, harass and otherwise instruct employees to do anything illegal. At this point, he didn't matter, because Blahsheblu had already lost everything, including his business which was sold off at auction for pennies on the dollar after 15 years of hard work and starting from scratch.
Now if you don't believe something like the above with Blahsheblu could ever happen to you, fine and very well. You can delete this missive and get on with your life. Good luck to you and we will wish you well.
However be advised within the united States (correct spelling,) there is a 99% probability that during sometime in their life before one reaches the age of 60, they will be sued civility or criminally (or both,) divorced and or attached by some alphabet governmental agency, especially the IRS!
If you are in dispute with a Federal Regulatory Agency, it is very easy for a low grade bureaucrat to press a button on his PC. He enters your social security number, and is able to quickly identify your bank accounts, securities, and real estate. Another few buttons are pressed ... and just like Blahsheblu, your property is "frozen," and your personal, business bank and brokerage accounts are transferred to the government. Bye bye ass and assets!
A bullet proof offshore trust With your assets held abroad in an offshore trust it is not possible for a creditor to locate them with any precision. In fact it is virtually impossible to confiscate trust assets. Why? The lawyers of bureaucrats and plaintiffs don't like difficult investigations and long, drawn out court procedures. Especially if lawsuits must be filed and pursued abroad. As a result, in most foreign jurisdictions (unless the local governments are collaborating), not even Big Brother can get at your assets.... even if they know where they are!
While Americans cannot expect any protection in Canada or vice-versa, co-operation in seizing the assets of Americans in most countries only comes into play when the issue is involved with serious crime, such as drug dealers, child porno rings, or bank robbers. Conversely, with our recommended offshore trust it becomes possible for you to personally access your funds, instantly, in cash, twenty-four hours a day, anywhere in the world.
It is also likely that if your offshore trust assets are earning excellent returns, you won't simply pull funds out for consumer spending. It is more likely that when you need cash you will borrow against these offshore assets. In view of this probability a credit line can be arranged in advance.
Shark Repellent It is well known that ambulance-chasing lawyers are constantly sniffing out potential defendants by identifying high net worth individuals. By keeping some of your assets in an offshore trust you can lower your visible level of wealth. This makes you a far less attractive victim.
Before a contingent fee lawyer will file suit, he always gets a full report on his target's assets. Since funds and properties held in an offshore trust are invisible (or at least less discoverable) much litigation can be avoided or favorably settled.
The same reasoning, reducing your visible net worth, goes for repelling other blood sucking pests and predators who seek an unwarranted share of your wealth. The list includes burglars, kidnappers, extortionists, ex-spouses, tax-collectors, disgruntled business associates, disgruntled employees, crooked cops, insurance sales people, and bent bureaucrats seeking bribes.
You're Word Particularly where your heirs are likely to squabble over their inheritance, it is likely that most of your estate could be eaten up in legal fees. Also, in some jurisdictions, the "forced heirship" law provides that you must leave all or a certain percentage of your property to a forgotten separated spouse, or to a child who detests you (and vice versa).
Assets in an offshore trust can, upon your demise, be given to any person or be used for any purpose you designate. Once again you have the right to choose who gets the benefit of your estate. You don't have to let the State make those choices for you.
Mobility Many countries have controls on foreign remittances that make it impossible to move money to where it is needed. Many Chinese-Americans were criminally charged years ago for simply sending subsistence money to aged parents on the mainland. Expat Cubans faced similar risks recently.
Wealth taxes and other taxes eat away at your savings and profits. An offshore trust can help you save on taxes, and allow you to spend or invest your own money as you please. Certain "roll-up" investment funds convert taxable income into non-taxable, unrealised capital gains.
Don't be like poor Mr. Blahsheblu, a should of, could type of person who didn't act when he had the time to… before any attacks against him started.
Don't be obtuse. Act now to protect your assets for your family, heirs and yourself.

The Nazi persecution of gays
Journalist Danny Lee gives a concise rundown of the events that led to the deaths of at least 15,000 gay men at the hands of the Nazis
Before World War II, radical artistic movements – such as the Dadaists (who were deliberately anti-art and anti-sense) – and political groups such as the Communists flourished in Berlin. The city, famous throughout the world for its relaxed attitude towards sex, was also the centre of Germany's gay community.
In addition, the German capital was the site of the Institute for Sexual Science. This had been founded in 1919 by pioneering sexologist and homosexual reformer Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935). His term to describe homosexuals – 'the third sex' – was in common use in the city at the time.
From freedom to tyranny
Despite Berlin's vitality, the city was like an isolated ship in a storm-tossed sea, thrown from crisis to crisis. In November 1918, from two Berlin balconies less than a mile apart, the leaders of both the Social Democratic Party and the Spartacists (who later formed the nucleus of the German Communist Party) proclaimed rival German republics.
However, the following January, after a Spartacist uprising, the movement's leaders Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht were tortured and murdered by right-wing army officers with whom the Social Democratic government felt it had to make a deal to ensure its survival. After the election of a National Assembly a few days later, Weimar, a small town outside Berlin, was made the new capital.
The Weimar Republic proved to be notoriously unstable. In the year of its birth, 1919, Adolf Hitler joined the German Workers' Party, one of many small, equally violent, racist groups. They had considerably less appeal for Berliners and other northern Germans than they had in parts of southern Germany, such as Bavaria. Nevertheless they played successfully on anxieties about out-of-control inflation, rising unemployment and feelings of humiliation and frustration left over from the country's defeat in World War I and the massive reparations that it had been compelled to agree to. By offering up the Jews and anyone they considered to be 'deviant' as scapegoats for all that was wrong, these parties began to grow in size. And Hitler and his National Socialists, or Nazis, began to achieve increasing importance.
On 30 January 1933, Germany's president Paul Hindenburg appointed Hitler chancellor. Among other restrictive actions, the Nazis began closing all gay bars and clubs and, in February, opened the first concentration camps. A national boycott of all Jewish businesses and professions was ordered at the beginning of April. And, in May, Hirschfeld's Institute for Sexual Science was closed and, a short time later, all of his books were burned – a fiery end to the first gay rights movement.
'The Night of the Long Knives'
In 1936, Heinrich Himmler, Reichsführer SS and head of the Gestapo, told the Germans: 'Just as we today have gone back to the ancient Germanic view on the question of marriage mixing different races, so too in our judgment of homosexuality – a symptom of degeneracy which could destroy our race – we must return to the guiding Nordic principle: extermination of degenerates.' But it had taken the Nazis some time to reach such a clear view against homosexuality.
Although the Nazi Party had always been officially anti-gay, in its early years many groups who opposed these Fascists lampooned them as homosexual. Hitler's 15-year friendship with the chief of staff of the SA (Sturmabteilung – storm troopers or 'Brown Shirts'), Ernst Röhm – who was publicly known to be gay after he appeared in court on homosexuality charges in 1925 – lent credence to this propaganda. Despite the gossip about his sexuality, Röhm was central to the Nazis' rise to power, transforming the Brown Shirts from a few embittered ex-soldiers in the early 1920s into the three-million-strong vehicle for Nazi terror that the storm troopers became in the early 1930s.
The Nazis' initial ambivalence towards gays evaporated quickly when, in 1934, Röhm and 300 others were charged with conspiring to overthrow Hitler, who ordered their execution without trial. Following this purge – the 'Night of the Long Knives' – Röhm's homosexuality was cited as another reason for his murder.
Paragraph 175 With the SA chief out of the way, Nazi attacks on the gay community escalated rapidly, and in 1935, the Law for the Protection of German Blood and German Honour was passed. This amended the existing Paragraph 175 of the Reich Penal Code:
An unnatural sex act committed between persons of male sex or by humans with animals is punishable by imprisonment; the loss of civil rights might also be imposed.
However, whereas previously the only punishable offence had been anal intercourse, the new Paragraph 175a ushered in 10 new possible 'acts' between men as crimes worthy of punishment, including kissing, embracing and having homosexual fantasies. Despite this, many anti-Nazis still attacked the Fascists as homosexual, and in revenge, the Nazis became increasingly vicious, later exporting their persecution of gays to the countries they occupied.
Diseased, not sub-human Nazis did not refer to gays as Unter Menschen (sub-human) in the way they did Jews. Homosexuals were regarded as diseased and in need of treatment. As a result, thousands were subjected to torture, often ending in death, in an attempt to deter them from being gay. Nevertheless, the 'diseased' tag did not protect gays from incarceration.
When homosexuals first began arriving in prisons and concentration camps, they were marked out with 'Paragraph 175' written on their backs. As hundreds of inmates turned into thousands, this badge was changed to a pink triangle, in the same way that the label Juden ('Jew') was changed to a yellow Star of David. Pink triangles were also used for sex offenders such as paedophiles, further associating gays with 'perverts'.
Since Nazis regarded women as mere vessels for bearing children, lesbianism was never a major issue. Gay women were never attacked in the same way that gay men were persecuted. Homosexual men were seen as a threat to the state and likely to reduce the potential for waging war and purifying the Germanic race.
A long history of worldwide persecution Nazis were by no means alone in their persecution of gays. The infamous Paragraph 175 had been added to the Reich Penal Code as long ago as 1871, more than 60 years before Hitler took power. It was just one more development in a long line of legislation around the world aimed at punishing homosexuals.
In England, for example, there is an extensive history of persecuting gays: as long ago as 1290, carrying out homosexual acts was punishable by death. At the same time as the Nazi persecution in Germany, the oppression of gays on the other side of the Channel was also accelerating. According to Richard Davenport-Hines’ 1990 study Sex, Death and Punishment, in 1938 Britain there were 134 prosecutions for sodomy and bestiality, 822 for attempted sodomy and indecent assault and 320 for gross indecency. In 1952, there were 670, 3,087 and 1,686 prosecutions, respectively. Through a law known as 'the blackmailer's charter', homosexual acts between consenting male adults remained illegal in England until 1967. Even today, schools are restricted in what they can teach about homosexuality.
However, some progress has been made. The Civil Partnership Act 2004 now allows same-sex couples in the UK to form a legal relationship in which they are treated in the same way as opposite-sex couples who have been married in a civil ceremony.
In Germany, homosexual acts remained criminalised until the late 1960s, and gays convicted under the Nazis were not pardoned until 1998. Unlike other victims of the Nazis, none of them has received compensation for what they went through.
How many died? The number of gay men who died at the hands of Hitler's Reich has never been fully established. It is not clear how many people lived in the gay community before or after World War II, and since many who were executed received no trial, there is only patchy evidence of how many were imprisoned or sent to their deaths.
Nevertheless, researchers estimate that some 50,000 men were convicted for committing homosexual acts, and that 15,000 gays died in Auschwitz alone, often as a result of being worked to death. At present, according to the historian Rictor Norton, the estimates for the total number of gay men who were killed by the Nazis range from 10,000 (undoubtedly too low) to 430,000 (probably too high). = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

4 Reasons Why Socialism Fails
Socialism cannot bring prosperity because it destroys the market functions of private property - Antony P. Mueller | Mises.org - September 10, 2018
The new "democratic socialists" want to make their followers believe that one could redistribute wealth and income and socialize a large part of the economy without harming production and productivity.
They claim that a comprehensive control of the economy by the government would bring more justice and more prosperity. The democratic socialists want more planning and less market. Yet this postulate ignores that socialism does not fail by accident or circumstance. Socialism fails because it suffers from four fundamental design defects. * First, socialism eradicates private property and markets and thus eliminates rational calculation. * Second, socialism allows soft budgets, so there is no mechanism in place to discard inefficient production methods. * Third, abolishing private property and replacing it by the state distorts the incentives. * Four, the socialist system with its absence of private property and of free markets inhibits the economic coordination of the system of division of labor and capital.
The Importance of Market Prices
Socialism cannot bring prosperity because it destroys the market functions of private property. Under socialism, private ownership of the means of production no longer exists, and thus there are no market prices for capital goods available. Institutionally, socialism consists in abolishing the market economy and replacing it with a planned economy. By doing away with private property of the means of production, one wipes-out market information and valuation. Even if the socialist administration puts price tags on the consumer goods, and the people may own consumer goods, there is no economic orientation about the relative scarcity of capital goods.
Many supporters of socialism suppose that business management is nothing more than a kind of registration or simple bookkeeping. Vladimir Lenin believed that the knowledge of reading and writing, and some expertise in the use of the basic arithmetic operations and some training in accounting, would be enough for the conduct of business operations. The socialists promote engineering and science, but they believe that there is no need for the entrepreneur. The regime may spend heavily on education but when there is no entrepreneurial economy, the people will stay poor, nevertheless.
The Role of Scarcity
The socialists ignore scarcity. They assume that a plan could stipulate the allocation of goods and services according to needs and wants. Yet the planners must answer how such a plan should find its standards of valuation. Without prices and markets, there is no orientation about which factors of production are more and which are less valuable. The socialist planners have no knowledge of the costs of the production process. Without markets, the prevailing value structure remains unknown.
Supply in relation to want makes goods valuable. In a market economy, the relative prices show the degrees of scarcity. By observing the prices, the market participants receive the information that guides them to align their economic decisions to the market signals. The price system informs about relative scarcities. There is no need for a comprehensive system of detailed information about the origin and nature of the scarcity beyond the prices to make a rational decision. The price system reduces complexity for the individual decision maker to the single number of the price. In a market economy, the economic participants need only partial knowledge to act rationally. In capitalism, the motivation to gain profits and to avoid costs work as an incentive to behave rationally. In a market economy, the prices provide information and incentives simultaneously for the seller and the buyer.
All production faces the problem of an almost unlimited number of ways how to produce a good. One can manufacture a commodity with very different raw materials, technologies, and combinations of the production factors and in an endless variety of designs.
Setting Priorities
Along with the technological feasibility of a project, one must calculate its profitability. Without costs in relation to sales, a technical evaluation makes no sense. That a project is technically viable does not mean that its realization is also worthwhile. What appears efficient from a technical point of view need not be so in terms of economic expediency. With costs left out of the consideration, socialist production is blind to the risk of producing goods that cost more than they are worth. In a socialist economy, even a benevolent dictator could not provide the right mix of goods in terms of price and quality
Socialists suppose that to implant their rule on the economy all that is necessary is to socialize the private companies, replace the management, and install worker councils, and the new economic order would flourish. The early socialists expected that abundance would follow not least because now the workers would get what before went into the hands of the capitalists as profits. Yet the socialists ignored that the socialization of the means of production was just the beginning. They failed miserably in running the economy.
The error of socialist economic planning is to assume that business management could also continue as before after socialist operators take over the capitalist management. While the socialist regime can train administrators and engineers and put the party members in the position of directors, these new leaders cannot decide according to relative scarcities because there is no longer a private property-based entrepreneurial price system available.
The reality of socialism is the command and obedience. Without orientation from markets and prices, brute force rules the allocation of the goods. The claim to combine socialism and democracy is as much a fraud as the assertion that socialism would bring prosperity. Socialism's true face is totalitarian despotism.
It is no wonder that even a degenerate capitalism produces more prosperity than the best socialism. Therefore, the task ahead cannot be to remove capitalism in favor of socialism but to make capitalism better. In other words: make it more capitalist. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Shamrock's Missive:
"When they started demanding papers and arresting those that didn't produce them, I knew trouble loomed on the horizon. We departed soon after I was stopped the third time (1937.) I begged my brother and his family to go with us. My brother and his family stayed. They died in the camps ... we survived thank God, and prospered." - Holocaust survivor

We reprint it in hopes you learn well from this old man's lessons about governments.
PT Shamrock - Mid November 2019
Horror Stories: "My grandparents fled Russia with my father during the 1917 revolution and because of the killing of Jews! Unfortunately they fled to Germany! I remember clearly the stories my grandmother told us as children about the old days. We learned our lessons well.
My mother and father saw the handwriting on the wall in Nazi Germany. Fortunately my father had (illegally) stashed away enough money in a numbered Swiss bank account, which enabled us to flee to South America in the nick of time. He did this even though it was a death sentence in Nazi Germany for ANYONE having a bank account outside Germany. I recall vividly people having to take a wheelbarrow full of old German marks to buy a loaf of bread. They didn't break any 'laws' at the time, but they did end up penniless or dead with the inflation and eventual collapse of the Mark and the country.
In particular I recall my father begging my aunt, uncle and upstairs neighbour Mrs. Rothstein, to flee before it was too late. I recall quite well what Mrs. Rothstein (our landlady) said in reply: 'Leave? We can't leave. What am I going to do with my mother's rocking chair and keepsakes? Our Synagogue and all our friends are here. I was born and married in this house and my parents are buried down the road. Our Rabbi says everything will be all right. Leave? How can you suggest such things?' All of our relatives and friends that didn't pay attention to my father's warnings died in the holocaust. They died as result of not taking action after seeing clear signs that something was very wrong.
After 15 years in South America we saw many similar government policies taking hold and left for the United States. I got married and we started a business and did very well for ourselves for more than 40 years. We are grateful to America for the opportunity it gave us. Our children and grandchildren were born in America and have had a great education. Unfortunately we see the very same warning signs my parents and grandparents saw before us, now taking hold in this once great land. My wife and I are leaving for good. Our children aren't, which we feel is a great mistake. Everyone is entitled to live their own lives and make their own choices.
You asked what the straw was that broke the camels back in our decision to leave? There wasn't any one thing, rather a series of events over a long period of time. Being fined by OSHA for a dry cleaning business we had just purchased under threat of being shut down and losing our entire investment. Then sued by HUD for discrimination! Can you imagine that, a Jew discriminating against someone? Our insurance company paid the claim though we denied any wrong doing and wanted to go to trial to defend ourselves. But the insurance company decided (against our wishes) it was less of a risk for them to pay, rather than face a possible larger judgment by a less than friendly jury. Result? After the insurance company settled the lawsuit they dumped us and we had to get insurance at 5 times the cost that we previously paid annually!
Then there was the time my wife was denied boarding a flight to visit our grandchildren because she didn't have any picture ID with her, (she doesn't drive.) We eventually got there but missed our original flight because of new 'safety' laws. We were never told prior to our flight that this was a requirement even though we booked direct with the airline. The airline staff told my wife to go to the motor vehicle department and get a state issued ID card with her picture and social security number on it for future flights!
Perhaps it is the fact that our neighbours 15 year-old daughter is pregnant or that our 7 year-old grandson is checked for guns and other weapons while going through a metal detector prior to being allowed into school! And of course there is the inevitable run in with the IRS. Anyone in America who is successful and makes money will 100% for sure have a run in with the IRS. The IRS is the closest agency to resemble the Gestapo yet! I know because I've dealt with and seen what both can do first hand. I recall one particularly nasty audit when the IRS agent asked me if I had a foreign bank account. I replied no and the female IRS agent said, "That's good because if you do and don't report it, that is a serious offence and all your assets will be frozen."
At first my wife and I discussed these and other concerns but for a long time we both were in denial. Then one day while I was looking for a particular book, I found a letter my grandfather had written to my father just before my grandfather died. He told my father: 'Never forget that religious and personal freedoms aren't taken away all at once. Rather it's done a little at a time so no one sees or realizes what's happening. If people are lied to often enough, most begin to believe the lie. All of a sudden you wake up and realize what you thought was there, isn't any longer. When your leaders are liars and cheats, it's time to leave!'
The freedom loving America that we came to and loved no longer exists. The freedoms and privacy of 40 years ago are gone forever. People don't seem to notice or care anymore. People say; America, love it or leave it. Well, we love America but lost faith in the people running it so we are leaving those people that run it.
If you feel this letter could benefit just one person, then you have my permission to reprint it if you change our name and new country of residence."

Dear Shamrock,
Long time reader here, thanks for everything.
What can you recommend for a very good, reasonably priced visa free travel second passport for the European Union? I'm and American if that's not a hindrance.
Thanks in advance.
